Chapter 13 - Ghosts of the Past

In a secure underground medical facility beneath Macau, Julian stood over Cora’s bed, his gun drawn as his personal medical team frantically hooked her to life support. Her heart rate was spiking to dangerous levels, her skin turning an eerie, pale shade of blue.
"We can't identify the toxin, Mr. Voss!" the lead doctor shouted, his hands shaking under Julian's terrifying glare. "It’s a custom-engineered biological compound. Standard atropine isn't working!"
"Fix her, or none of you leave this room alive!" Julian roared, slamming the doctor against the wall.
Suddenly, Cora’s eyes flew open. Though her body was paralyzed by the poison, her sharp mind remained functional. She grabbed Julian’s lapel with weak, trembling fingers, pulling him down to her lips.
"Drawer... three..." Cora choked out, her medical brain analyzing her own dying symptoms. "My emergency kit... synthetic lipid emulsion... two hundred milligrams..."
Julian didn't hesitate. He grabbed the syringe from her kit, plunged the needle directly into her IV line, and pressed the plunger down. Within seconds, the cardiac monitor stabilized, her ragged breathing smoothing out as the synthetic emulsion bound to the toxin in her bloodstream.
When Cora finally regained full consciousness two hours later, she pulled off her oxygen mask and sat up. "It wasn't a poison designed to kill me, Julian," she said, her voice raspy but clear. "It was a genetic key. The toxin was created using my mother's blood chemistry. Whoever built that compound had access to Isabella Falcone's live biological samples."

Julian took her cold hands in his. "Your father told you she died in a municipal clinic ten years ago."
"My father lied about everything," Cora said, her eyes flashing with a dangerous resolve. "My mother isn't dead."
