Chapter 2 - The Contract Written in Sin

Cora didn't scream when the heavy oak door caved inward. Her medical instincts kicked in before fear could paralyze her. She reached for the heavy cast-iron skillet on her small stove, but before her fingers could curl around the handle, a massive hand grabbed her wrist, pinning her against the wall.

It wasn't Felix's loan sharks. It was Tomas. Behind him stood Julian Voss, his towering figure filling the cramped hallway, clad in a tailored charcoal suit that looked absurdly expensive against her peeling wallpaper.

"Miss Whitaker," Julian’s calm, lethal voice cut through the damp air of the room. "You have nine days until eviction, and forty-eight hours before Felix sells your father’s debt to men who harvest organs."

"Did you come to finish the job you started at the auction?" Cora spat, wincing as Tomas held her tight. "I didn't say a word to anyone. I don't care about your war."

Julian stepped closer, his shadow swallowing her completely. He reached out, his long fingers gently catching her chin, tilting her face up to meet his dark gaze. "You saved three lives in the emergency room last month during a drive-by shooting. You don't panic under fire. I need a personal physician who doesn't report gunshot wounds to the police."

He tossed a thick leather folder onto her small table.

"Your father’s debt is paid in full. Your apartment building is now owned by my shell company. Sign the contract, Cora. You belong to the Voss estate now—or you can see how long you last on the streets when the Falcones figure out why I covered your face with mine."
