Chapter 9 - The Traitor's Bullet

The dock became a slaughterhouse. Muzzle flashes illuminated the rain as the two largest crime families in New York annihilated each other.

Cora crawled through the mud and blood, her eyes searching for Julian. She found him exchanging fire behind a crane with Tomas, who was firing wildly at his former boss.

"You killed Elena!" Julian roared, advancing on Tomas despite receiving two bullets to the chest. "It wasn't Falcone—it was you! You delayed her surgery payment!"

"She was weakness, Julian!" Tomas screamed back, bleeding heavily. "You were becoming soft! I had to build a monster, and Elena’s death made you the Undertaker!"

Tomas raised his rifle, aiming directly at Julian's heart. Julian, exhausted and bleeding out, couldn't raise his arm in time.

"No!" Cora screamed.

She sprang from the darkness, tackling Tomas to the slippery metal deck. The rifle discharged into the air. Tomas violently shoved Cora off, raising his sidearm to shoot her point-blank.

BANG.

A shot rang out, echoing across the pier. Tomas froze, a red hole appearing in the center of his forehead, before falling backward into the dark ocean below.

Standing twenty yards away, holding a smoking gun, was Arthur Whitaker. He looked at Cora, a strange, fleeting expression of parental regret on his face—just before Don Falcone stepped up behind Arthur and fired a bullet into his back.

"Useless," Falcone muttered, turning his gun toward Cora.
