Chapter 17 - Blood and Scalpel

The flight back to New York was a race against extinction.
While Julian's private jet tore through the dark clouds over the Atlantic, Cora worked relentlessly in the onboard medical bay, extracting blood samples from her mother’s thawed, stabilizing body. Using the high-tech centrifuge on the aircraft, Cora synthesized a broad-spectrum airborne neutralizer—a vaccine created from her mother's unique antibodies.
Below them, Manhattan was falling into chaos. Elena's sleeper cells had released the biological agent through the city's central subway ventilation system. Panic gripped the streets as emergency services were overwhelmed.
"We have three hours before the toxin becomes irreversible," Cora said, handing Julian a modified military aerosol canister filled with the newly synthesized cure. "If we can detonate these counter-agent canisters at the main filtration hub beneath Grand Central Station, the subway circulation fans will spread the neutralizer across the entire island."
Julian checked the magazine of his rifle, racking the slide with a heavy metallic click. "The hub will be heavily guarded by Elena’s remaining mercenaries. They know we're coming."
Cora picked up two tactical syringes loaded with a concentrated neurotoxin she had mixed herself. She no longer wore the scrubs of an overworked nurse, nor the silk dress of a mafia queen. She wore dark Kevlar armor, her hair pulled back, her eyes burning with an unshakeable fire.
"Then let's go save our city," Cora said softly.

Julian looked at her, reaching out to gently touch her face. "When this is over, Cora... no more blood. No more shadows."
"When this is over," she promised, leaning into his touch, "we burn the shadow world to the ground."
