Chapter 18 - The Fall of the Architect

The underground catacombs beneath Grand Central Station were a warzone. Steam hissed from ruptured pipes as Julian and Cora fought their way through wave after wave of Serpent's Ring mercenaries.
Julian moved with terrifying, protective efficiency, laying down cover fire while Cora advanced from pillar to pillar, using her medical darts to neutralize enemies silently with instantaneous muscle paralytics.
They reached the central fan room—a massive, vaulted chamber housing three industrial turbines that circulated air throughout the entire New York subway network.
Standing atop the high catwalk overlooking the main intake fan was Elena Voss, her arm bandaged, holding a remote detonator connected to a massive glass cylinder filled with concentrated green gas.
"You're too late, brother!" Elena screamed over the roar of the massive fan blades. "One drop of this concentrate, and five million people die in their sleep!"
"Elena, stop!" Julian yelled, stepping out into the open, dropping his rifle onto the metal grate floor. "Look at me! Look at what you've become! Dad didn't raise us to be monsters!"
"Dad died a coward!" Elena shrieked, her thumb hovering over the detonator button. "And you're going to die with his legacy!"
A shadow moved silently along the upper girders above Elena.
Cora dropped from the ceiling rafters like an avenging angel, landing hard on the catwalk behind Elena. Before Elena could react, Cora slammed a high-voltage cardiac defibrillator paddle straight into Elena’s back, delivering two thousand volts of electrical current directly into her nervous system.
Elena gasped, her muscles locking up instantly as the detonator slipped from her limp fingers. Cora caught the detonator mid-air, kicking the glass cylinder away from the edge of the catwalk.
Elena fell to her knees, twitching violently as the electric charge dissipated, her eyes wide with shock and defeat. "You... you didn't shoot me..."

"I'm a nurse," Cora said coldly, placing the cure canister into the main turbine intake and locking it into place. "We don't execute patients. We cure diseases."
Cora pressed the master ventilation button. The massive fans roared to life, pulling the liquid cure into the high-pressure air streams, dispersing the blue neutralizing mist into every subway line beneath the city.
