Chapter 13 - The Golden Cage

Back at the Querétaro residence, the morning sunlight poured golden and warm through the sparkling clean living room windows. Mariana stood by the kitchen island, pouring fresh orange juice into a tall glass for Sofía.

Life had taken on a rhythm of pure, unadulterated peace. For the first time in over a decade, there was no secret tension, no walking on eggshells, no sudden slamming of doors, and no financial drain bleeding her accounts dry.

"Mommy, look at my drawing!" Sofía called out, running into the kitchen with a large sheet of construction paper and a box of vibrant colored markers.

Mariana knelt down, smiling warmly as she examined the paper. Sofía had drawn a bright yellow house surrounded by blooming flowers, a tall, smiling woman standing proudly on the front porch, and a little girl holding a golden trophy. There was no man in the picture. No shadowy figure in the background. Just two people standing tall on land they owned completely.

"It's the most beautiful drawing I've ever seen, my love," Mariana whispered, wrapping her arms around her daughter and kissing her cheek. "We're going to frame this and put it right over the fireplace."

"And we don't ever have to give our money away to Grandma Elvira anymore, right?" Sofía asked innocently, her wide eyes looking up with complete trust.

"Never again, sweetie," Mariana promised, her voice steady and resolute. "Everything we have belongs to us, and no one will ever take it away."

Just then, the video intercom on the wall buzzed softly.

Mariana frowned slightly. She walked over to the panel and pressed the viewer button. Standing outside the front gate was not a courier, nor a neighbor, but a sleek, matte-black luxury sedan with tinted windows. A tall man in a dark suit was standing by the intercom camera, holding a manila envelope.

"Mrs. Torres," the man’s voice echoed through the speaker box, smooth and polished. "I am calling on behalf of your husband's corporate legal representatives. We have a settlement proposal regarding the final dissolution of property. It requires your immediate signature."

Mariana’s expression hardened. She pressed the talk button, her voice sharp as steel. "Tell Raúl’s lawyers that any further communication goes through my attorney, Alejandro Garza. If you don't leave my property right now, I am calling the federal marshal on duty."

The man in the sedan smiled slowly at the camera, held up the envelope, and whispered, "You might want to see what's inside first, Mariana. It concerns your daughter's school."
