Chapter 9 - The Bank Heist

At 8:30 PM, the downtown branch of Banco Central was dark, quiet, and closed to the public. Inside the high-security subterranean vault, however, a digital tablet glowed softly in the dim fluorescent light.
Alejandro Garza stood beside a tech specialist he had hired off the books, watching code stream rapidly across a ruggedized laptop screen. Beside them stood a trusted private investigator who had successfully bypassed the secondary maintenance gate using an emergency override code provided by Mariana from her holding cell.
"I'm in," the tech specialist whispered, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "Bypassing biometric sensor... overriding secondary vault lock... box number 412... jackpot."
The heavy metal door of safety deposit box 412 clicked open with a satisfying mechanical clunk. Inside sat a thick, leather-bound notebook and a series of printed bank statements.
Garza reached in with gloved hands, pulled the ledger out, and flipped it open. Under the harsh light, every single page was meticulously filled out in Elvira’s cramped, spidery handwriting. It detailed the exact dates Raúl had stolen Mariana’s corporate login credentials, the exact offshore accounts where the embezzled funds were being laundered, and—most importantly—a signed, witnessed agreement between Raúl and Elvira plotting how to frame Mariana for the crime if she ever filed for divorce.
Inserted neatly into the back cover of the notebook was a flash drive containing recorded phone conversations between Raúl and his mother discussing the entire fraudulent scheme.
"Got it," Garza breathed into his phone receiver, connecting directly to Commander Vargas’s private line at the federal bureau. "Commander, I suggest you send a squad to the notary public's office on Juárez Avenue right now. Your suspects are about to commit federal fraud."
Twenty minutes later, across town at the municipal notary office, Raúl and Elvira sat triumphantly across from a public clerk, pushing the final paperwork across the desk to seize Mariana's home.
"Sign the emergency asset freeze," Elvira cackled softly, rubbing her hands together with glee. "By midnight, that ungrateful witch will be behind bars, and the house, the car, and everything she owns will belong to my son."
Before the clerk could pick up his pen, the heavy glass doors of the office burst open. Four armed federal agents poured into the room, their badges gleaming under the overhead lights.

"Raúl Medina and Elvira Medina," Commander Vargas announced loudly, stepping into the center of the room with a pair of cold steel handcuffs in his hand. "You are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, digital fraud, conspiracy, and the falsification of federal evidence."
Raúl turned as white as a ghost, his pen dropping from his trembling fingers as the heavy cuffs snapped onto his wrists. Elvira let out a piercing shriek, clawing wildly at the air as the agents hauled them both toward the exit in front of a stunned crowd of late-night clients.
