Chapter 7 - The Interrogation Room

The holding room at the federal investigations bureau smelled faintly of old floor wax, cheap coffee, and pure dread. Mariana sat across a heavy metal table, her hands cuffed loosely to a steel loop bolted into the center of the wood. Across from her sat a stern, middle-aged investigator named Commander Vargas, flipping slowly through a thick stack of printed financial ledgers.

"The evidence is remarkably clean, Mrs. Torres," Commander Vargas said, not looking up from the papers. "Over three dozen wire transfers routed from your husband’s industrial plant maintenance account directly into an offshore shell company, with your corporate digital signature authorizing every single transaction."

"That signature is forged!" Mariana said, leaning forward, her voice ringing with desperate fury. "Look at the time stamps! Those authorizations were logged on weekends when I was out of the country, or late at night when my corporate terminal was locked down! Someone stole my digital access key!"

"And who would have access to your private terminal key, Mrs. Torres?" Vargas asked calmly, raising his eyes to meet hers. "According to your personnel file, your husband, Raúl Medina, is a maintenance technician at that exact same industrial plant. But here's the fascinating part: Raúl’s bank records show he never received a single peso of those illegal funds. Every single cent went into an account registered under the maiden name of your mother-in-law, Elvira Medina."

Mariana froze. The pieces clicked together in her mind with terrifying clarity.

It wasn't just about the 10,000-peso Christmas bonus. It wasn't just about domestic control or petty arguments over groceries. It was an elaborate, years-long insurance policy designed by Elvira and Raúl. They had systematically framed her for corporate embezzlement, positioning her as the mastermind behind a massive financial crime so that if she ever tried to leave, divorce them, or strip them of their assets, they could pull a digital trigger and send her away for a decade.

"They set me up," Mariana whispered, the horror washing over her in a freezing wave. "Raúl and his mother... they used my login."

"If you cannot prove your husband's direct complicity within the next twelve hours, the district attorney is going to sign a formal indictment," Vargas said coldly. "And under federal asset forfeiture laws, this house, your bank accounts, and your corporate salary will be seized immediately by the state. As for your daughter... she will be placed in emergency protective custody."
