Chapter 15 - The Secret Meeting

Late that evening, after Sofía had fallen fast asleep in her own bed, Mariana met Alejandro Garza at a dimly lit, quiet café on the outskirts of Querétaro. Garza slid a confidential dossier across the wooden table.

"We ran the license plate of that black sedan," Garza said, keeping his voice low so the nearby patrons wouldn't overhear. "It belongs to a registered shell corporation linked to Don Lorenzo—a notorious figure involved in high-level financial laundering and contraband networks throughout the Bajío region."

Mariana opened the dossier. Inside were surveillance photos, police reports, and a criminal profile that made her stomach turn. "What does a cartel-adjacent syndicate want with me?"

"They don't want you, Mariana—they want the digital encryption keys from your corporate terminal at Logística del Bajío," Garza explained, leaning forward. "When you ran that forensic audit to expose Raúl and Elvira, your terminal automatically downloaded an encrypted master ledger containing the transaction hashes of every single shell company connected to Don Lorenzo's network. You are sitting on the blueprint of their entire money-laundering operation."

"I didn't mean to download their ledger," Mariana said, her hands trembling slightly as she clutched her coffee cup. "I was just looking for Raúl's embezzlement trail."

"To them, intent doesn't matter. Only possession does," Garza warned. "They believe you have a backup copy of that master ledger hidden somewhere. And they will stop at nothing to get it."

"If I turn over the ledger to federal intelligence, won't they protect us?"

"Normally, yes," Garza sighed, rubbing his temples. "But Don Lorenzo has informants inside the federal precinct. If we hand it over through official channels right now, the leak will happen within hours, and you and Sofía will be targets."

"Then what do we do?" Mariana asked, her eyes flashing with fierce resolve. "Just sit here and wait for them to break down our door?"

"No," Garza smiled grimly. "We set our own trap."
