Chapter 19 - The Brand New Day

Spring arrived in Querétaro with an explosion of vibrant jacaranda blossoms painting the streets in shades of brilliant purple.
Inside the house on Calle Juárez, the atmosphere was filled with the sweet, comforting scent of fresh vanilla pancakes, warm chocolate, and blooming jasmine from the patio garden.
Mariana stood by the kitchen counter, wearing a bright turquoise blazer, preparing for her promotion interview at Logística del Bajío. With the internal audit fully resolved and her name cleared with highest honors, the executive board had offered her the position of Director of Corporate Operations—a role with double her previous salary and complete executive autonomy.
Sofía bounded into the kitchen, wearing her new school uniform, her backpack neatly zipped, humming a cheerful melody.
"Mommy, are you nervous about your meeting today?" Sofía asked, setting her lunchbox on the counter.
Mariana smiled, kneeling down to tie her daughter's shoelaces. "Not at all, my love. When you know your own worth, and you've fought for everything you have, you never have to be nervous about the future."
"Can we go get ice cream after school to celebrate?"
May you like
"We can get the biggest ice cream parlor in Querétaro," Mariana laughed, standing up and handing Sofía her pink lunchbox.
They walked out the front door together into the warm morning sunshine. Mariana locked the heavy wooden door behind her, sliding the deadbolt home with that same satisfying, definitive click—not out of fear, but out of pride.
