Chapter 20 - The Final Toast

That evening, the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the Querétaro sky in brilliant strokes of amber, magenta, and deep indigo.

On the floral tablecloth—the very same one from that fateful New Year's Eve—sat no pot of humble beans, no hurried meals, and no shadow of fear. Instead, the table was adorned with a magnificent celebratory feast: traditional roast pork, sweet corn tamales, fresh tropical fruits, and sparkling cider chilling in an ice bucket.

Mariana and Sofía sat together at the head of the table, laughing and clinking their crystal glasses filled with sparkling cider.

"To new beginnings, to absolute freedom, and to never letting anyone make us lower our eyes," Mariana toasted, looking lovingly into her daughter's bright, happy eyes.

"To us, Mommy," Sofía cheered, clinking her glass proudly against her mother's.

Through the open window, a gentle spring breeze swept into the room, carrying the sweet scent of blooming flowers and the distant sound of children playing in the street. Mariana looked around her home—every wall, every room, every single tile bought and paid for by her own strength, her own brilliance, and her unbreakable spirit.

She had started that fateful year by serving beans to men who thought they owned her. She was ending it as the absolute queen of her own castle, completely untouchable, and forever free.
