Chapter 6 - The Trap Closes

The morning sun rose over Querétaro, painting the colonial rooftops in brilliant shades of gold and amber. New Year’s Day brought a crisp, beautiful stillness to the city. Inside her newly secured home, Mariana poured freshly brewed coffee into her favorite ceramic mug and walked out to the small sunny patio.
Sofía was still fast asleep in her own bedroom, breathing peacefully without the oppressive tension that used to choke the hallways. Mariana felt a deep, profound sense of renewal. She had survived the storm. The divorce papers were ready to be officially filed with the family court on January 2nd, and her financial independence was ironclad.
Or so she thought.
At 9:00 AM, a sharp, aggressive pounding echoed against her front door.
Mariana frowned, walking down the hallway with her mug of coffee. She checked the peephole expecting a courier or a neighbor. Instead, two men in sharp, charcoal-gray business suits stood outside. Neither of them wore company badges, but both radiated an unmistakable aura of cold corporate intimidation.
Mariana opened the door just a crack, keeping the security chain securely latched. "Can I help you?"
"Mrs. Mariana Torres?" the taller man asked, his voice entirely devoid of warmth. He flashed a leather folder containing what looked like official corporate credentials. "I am Agent Morales from the Federal Special Prosecutor’s Office for Financial Crimes. We need to speak with you immediately regarding an urgent matter of corporate embezzlement and fraud originating from your department at Logística del Bajío."
Mariana’s blood ran cold. She gripped the edge of the door frame. "Embezzlement? That’s absurd. I run the administrative department. I am the one who uncovers fraud, I don't commit it."
"With all due respect, ma'am, that is for the investigators to determine," the second man said, holding up a warrant. "We received an anonymous tip accompanied by encrypted bank records and digital signatures matching your administrative login credentials, detailing the systematic theft of over 450,000 pesos over the past thirty-six months. Please step outside and accompany us downtown."
"No," Mariana said, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to remain steady. "This is a mistake. Let me grab my laptop, let me show you—"
Before she could finish, the tall man slammed his palm against the heavy wooden door, snapping the security chain with a violent crunch. They pushed past her into the living room.

"Mommy?"
Sofía appeared at the end of the hallway, rubbing her eyes, clutching her teddy bear once again, staring in sheer terror as two strange men swarmed her home.
