Chapter 2 - The Digital Ledger

Midnight descends upon the Venturi estate, blanketing the snow-dusted grounds in heavy silence. In the private basement study, illuminated only by the cold blue glow of a triple-monitor setup, Luciano sits motionless. Standing behind him is Marco, his most trusted capo and head of internal security.

On the central screen, a playback of the west wing hallway plays at double speed. The timestamp reads 2:14 AM, three nights prior.

“Stop right there, Marco,” Luciano murmurs.

Marco hits pause. The image freezes on a cloaked figure slipping out of Theo’s suite. Even with the hood pulled low, the ornate diamond tennis bracelet catching the corridor sconce light is unmistakable. It is the exact piece Luciano gifted Bernadette on their fifth anniversary.

“She didn't just take the train, Boss,” Marco says quietly, sliding a manila folder onto the mahogany desk. “She’s been systematically moving assets out of the primary accounts into shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands. Companies tied directly to her brother, Julian.”

Luciano opens the folder, flipping through swift bank transfers, real estate purchases in Zurich, and signed authorization forms bearing his own forged signature. The scale of the betrayal is staggering. It isn't just about petty jealousy toward Theo; it is a calculated, multi-million-dollar heist orchestrated right under his nose while he focused on expanding the family’s shipping empire.

“She thought she had complete control because she controls the household staff,” Luciano says, his voice eerily calm. In the mafia underworld, betrayal from an outsider is expected; betrayal from within the bed is a death sentence. But Bernadette is the mother of his eldest son, and the political alliances tied to her family run deep.

“What do you want to do, Boss? The boys can have the offshore accounts frozen by morning, but her brother will know within the hour,” Marco asks, resting a hand on his holster.

“Let him know,” Luciano replies, a cold smile touching the corners of his mouth. “Let them both think they are winning. I want to see how deep the rabbit hole goes before I cut the cord.”

Upstairs, completely unaware that her digital fortress has been completely breached, Bernadette paces her bedroom floor, dialing her brother’s private number for the fifth time in ten minutes.

“Answer your phone, Julian,” she hisses into the receiver as it rings out to voicemail. “Luciano is sniffing around. We need to accelerate the final transfer before he finds out about the trust fund.”
