Chapter 6 - The Shadows in the Nursery

Three weeks later, the Venturi estate feels vastly different. The oppressive, cold atmosphere that Bernadette cultivated for years has been swept away, replaced by quiet routine and watchful security.

In the west wing nursery, Theo sits on the plush rug, building an intricate tower out of wooden blocks. Next to him sits Felix. The transformation in the older boy is stark; the haughty, aggressive sneer has been replaced by a quiet, haunted hesitancy.

“Can I... can I help with the bridge?” Felix asks softly, pointing to a curved wooden arch.

Theo looks up at his older half-brother, his big eyes blinking before a bright, gap-toothed smile breaks across his face. “Yeah! Put it right there, big brother!”

From the doorway, Elena watches with a cup of warm tea in her hand, smiling gently. Luciano stands beside her in the shadows, his arms crossed over his chest.

“He’s changing,” Elena murmurs. “Therapy is working. He realizes now that he doesn't have to terrorize Theo to earn love.”

“It takes time,” Luciano replies, his voice softer than usual. “Blood is heavy, Elena. But honor is heavier.”

Suddenly, the secure intercom on the wall beside the door crackles to life. Marco’s voice comes through, tense and urgent.

“Boss, you need to come down to the perimeter gate immediately. We have a visitor.”

Luciano’s eyes narrow. “Who?”

“It’s not one of ours. And it’s not local. It’s a courier from the European Syndicate. He brought a sealed lockbox bearing your father’s old personal crest. The one from Palermo.”

Luciano’s heart skips a beat. His father died twenty years ago in a warehouse fire that supposedly wiped out the old guard of the Venturi family. Nothing bearing that crest should exist.
