Chapter 12 - Whispers in the Boardroom

Back on the 42nd floor of Apex Capital, the rhythm of corporate life absorbed the drama like a sponge. Acquisitions moved forward, quarterly projections were met, and the massive merger Nora had spent six months orchestrating finally cleared its regulatory hurdles.
Yet, whispers lingered in the executive suites. In a city like Brighton, a $140,000 credit card fraud scandal involving a high-society gala and a disgraced marketing CEO was prime material for corporate gossip columns.
During a mid-week executive committee meeting, Liam Vance—now operating independently of his brother’s firm under a restructured banner—arrived to present the revised marketing strategy for Apex’s upcoming community initiative.
When Liam entered the conference room, he looked hesitant, his eyes darting toward the head of the long mahogany table where Nora sat reviewing financial spreadsheets.
“Ms. Whitman,” Liam began, clearing his throat awkwardly as he unrolled his blueprints. “I just wanted to say... thank you for not letting my firm take the fall for Caleb’s mess. We managed to salvage our vendor contracts, but it was a close call.”
Nora looked up from her documents, her expression cool and professional.
“You were a victim of his fraud too, Liam. But let this be a lesson,” Nora said evenly, her voice carrying across the silent boardroom. “Due diligence isn't just about checking a credit card’s limit. It’s about checking the character of the person holding it.”
Liam swallowed hard and nodded. “Understood, Ms. Whitman. It won't happen again.”

“Proceed with the presentation,” Nora instructed, sliding the folder aside.
As Liam clicked through the slide deck, the executives around the table murmured approval. But Nora noticed something different in the room this time: no one looked at her with condescension or dismissed her as a silent partner. They looked at her with absolute, unyielding respect.
