Chapter 17 - Clearing the Slate

The following morning, Nora arrived at her office before sunrise. The floor was quiet, illuminated only by the pale blue glow of computer monitors and the distant lights of early morning traffic on the highway below.
She opened her personal laptop and logged into her banking portal.
For the first time in six months, every single account connected to her name was pristine. No unauthorized charges, no pending fraud investigations, no hidden liabilities.
She scrolled down to her recurring transactions.
There was the monthly mortgage payment. There was the utility bill. And there was the automatic $50 donation to the literacy organization she had supported for years—an organization that actually helped people build futures instead of staging fake galas.
She paused, looking at the recurring deduction.
Then she opened a new transfer window and increased the monthly donation to $500.
A small, quiet gesture. Not out of guilt, not out of anger, but out of intention.
Her phone buzzed gently beside her coffee mug. She glanced down, expecting another corporate email.
Instead, it was a notification from Maya: “Board meeting moved to 10:00 AM. Also, your dry cleaning is ready downstairs.”

Nora smiled, typed a quick reply, and closed her laptop.
The past was audited, settled, and filed away in a locked cabinet. The ledger of her life was balanced down to the final cent.
