Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the House of Cards

For ten seconds, the only sound was the wind off the ocean.
Liam stared at the business card, then up at Nora, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
“Your... your card?” Liam whispered, his voice trembling. “Are you telling me Caleb Ross isn't a venture capitalist?”
“I’m telling you Caleb Ross couldn't afford a ticket to this estate if he had to pay for it with his own bank account,” Nora said flatly. “His marketing firm has been bleeding money for three years. He lives off whatever credit he can siphon from people foolish enough to trust him.”
Panic washed over Liam’s face, instantly replacing the professional composure he had maintained all morning. “Oh, God. Oh, no. We ordered custom imported French tableware. We flew in florists from the city. If he can’t pay, who pays us? We’re out over fifty grand in labor and materials!”
“You won’t get a dime from him,” Nora said. “Unless you want to be an accessory to credit card fraud when the police finish reviewing my bank statements.”
Liam grabbed his head with both hands. “The police? Jesus Christ. He told us this was a celebration of his firm’s massive Series B funding round. He said he was launching a high-profile philanthropic initiative to give back to the community.”
“He’s giving back alright,” Nora muttered bitterly. “Using my money.”
Just then, the double doors of the estate’s grand ballroom swung open.
Stepping out onto the stone terrace, holding a glass of sparkling water and laughing heartily with two men in expensive suits, was Caleb Ross.
He froze mid-laugh as his eyes locked onto Nora standing beside Liam near the floral crates.
The color drained entirely from Caleb’s face. The charming, effortless billionaire facade shattered instantly, leaving behind a cornered, panicked fraudster.
Caleb excused himself from the two investors, his voice cracking slightly as he muttered something about an urgent logistics issue, and practically sprinted across the terrace toward them.
“Nora?” Caleb hissed, grabbing her arm and pulling her toward a secluded corner behind a stone pillar. “What the hell are you doing here? Are you insane?”
May you like
Nora didn’t flinch. She simply looked down at his hand on her sleeve until he hastily let go, wiping his sweating palms on his tailored trousers.
“I could ask you the same thing, Caleb,” Nora said, her voice dangerously calm. “Though I suppose ‘what are you doing stealing $140,000 from my black card’ is a slightly longer conversation.”
