Chapter 15 - A New Horizon

The autumn air had turned crisp by late October. Apex Capital announced its multi-million-dollar acquisition of a rising logistics firm, and Nora’s name graced the front page of the regional business journal.

Accompanying the article was a full-page portrait: Nora standing by her 42nd-floor office window, looking directly into the camera with an expression of unshakeable calm and absolute authority.

When the issue hit newsstands, copies quickly circulated through every major financial office in Brighton.

Maya dropped a copy onto Nora’s desk with a theatrical thud.

“Front page, digital syndication, and the CEO of our parent company sent an email praising your leadership during the transition,” Maya beamed. “How does it feel to be the most talked-about executive in the city?”

Nora glanced at the photograph, then looked up at Maya. “It feels like Tuesday morning over the kitchen sink, Maya. Except this time, the phone isn't buzzing with bad news.”

Maya laughed, leaning against the edge of the desk. “So, are we celebrating this weekend? A quiet dinner? Or are we renting out Rosecliff Estate just to prove a point?”

Nora chuckled, closing the magazine. “Let’s skip the estate. How about dinner at that quiet Italian place downtown where the wine is reasonably priced and nobody brings a ledger?”

“Sold,” Maya said.

As Maya walked out of the office, Nora turned her gaze toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. The city spread out below her in a grid of concrete, glass, and ambition. For years, she had carried the invisible weight of someone else’s insecurities and financial deceit. Now, looking out over the skyline, she felt lighter than air.
