Nora stood on the terrace of her favorite downtown café, sipping a black coffee and reviewing her tablet. The fraudulent charges had been fully reversed by the bank’s fraud division. The pending transactions had been permanently blocked before a single penny of her capital reached Caleb’s fraudulent vendors.

Maya walked up to the outdoor table, holding a fresh pastry and smiling brightly.
“You look relaxed,” Maya noted, sliding into the chair opposite Nora. “Like someone who just survived a corporate hostile takeover.”
Nora locked her tablet and slid it into her leather bag.
“I did survive one,” Nora said, smiling faintly. “And the audit came out clean.”
Maya laughed, raising her espresso cup. “To clean ledgers.”

“To clean ledgers,” Nora agreed, clinking her cup against Maya’s.
As she looked out over the bustling city streets, Nora felt a profound sense of lightness. For the first time in years, every transaction, every connection, and every choice on her balance sheet belonged entirely to her.
