Six months to the day after the first fraudulent charge appeared on her black card while eating toast over her kitchen sink, Nora stood in her kitchen once again.

The apartment was quiet. Morning light poured through the narrow windows over the counter. A delivery truck groaned somewhere on the street below. Her coffee machine clicked as it finished warming.

She held a piece of toast in one hand, taking a slow, calm bite.

Her phone buzzed once beside the coffee maker.

Nora glanced down.

She didn't freeze. She didn't hold her breath. She didn't feel her stomach tighten.

She picked up the phone.

Calendar Reminder: Quarterly investment review at 2:00 PM.

She unlocked the screen and opened her banking app.

Nora smiled, set the phone back down on the counter, and finished her coffee.

The storm had passed. The ledger was clean. And the rest of her life was waiting.
