Chapter 3 - THE MORNING BRIEFING AND THE FIRST STRIKEDawn broke over the Cole estate, painting the sky in shades of bruised purple and gold. But inside the grand dining room, the atmosphere was far from picturesque.

Nathan sat at the head of the long mahogany table, wearing a crisp charcoal suit, scrolling through his tablet. Lily sat beside him, happily swinging her legs while eating a plate of pancakes smothered in maple syrup—a breakfast prepared personally by the estate’s head chef, who looked terrified yet eager to please.

I sat a few seats down, still wearing my maid’s uniform because my civilian clothes were back in my tiny, rented apartment across town.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the dining room burst open.

Victoria strode in, flanked by two private attorneys and a camera crew from a local tabloid network. Her hair was immaculate, her expression a mask of theatrical outrage. She had clearly anticipated using public pressure and media spin to bend Nathan to her will.

"Nathan!" Victoria cried out, rushing toward the table with theatrical tears welling in her eyes. "Thank God you haven't done anything rash! The police came to my apartment this morning—they said there was an arrest warrant! You must be out of your mind. Some gold-digging maid has completely poisoned your judgment!"

The cameraman stepped forward, thrusting a lens directly toward Nathan and Lily.

Nathan didn't even flinch. He didn't stand up. He slowly set down his coffee cup, the ceramic clinking softly against the saucer.

"Turn that camera off," Nathan commanded, his voice carrying an icy authority that made the cameraman instinctively step back.

"Mr. Cole! Victoria Sterling here representing public interest and family values," one of the attorneys barked, stepping forward with a leather briefcase. "We are prepared to file an immediate defamation and counter-custody suit if you pursue these baseless criminal allegations. Miss Sterling is a pillar of society, and this fabricated narrative of an assault will not—"

"Marcus," Nathan said calmly, not even looking at the lawyer.

The side door opened, and Marcus stepped in, followed not by private security, but by two uniformed city police detectives holding a pair of polished steel handcuffs.

Victoria’s theatrical tears vanished instantly, replaced by a flash of genuine panic. "Nathan... what is this? You’re arresting me? Over a maid?"

"Over attempted murder, child endangerment, financial fraud, and conspiracy to commit extortion," Nathan said, standing up slowly. He towered over the table, his presence commanding the entire room. He walked around the table until he stood directly in front of Victoria.

"You thought because I loved you—or rather, because I tolerated you while building my empire—that you could play God with my family," Nathan whispered, close enough that only she could hear. "You raised a hand against my four-year-old daughter. You struck the woman I never stopped loving. And you tried to steal fifty million dollars from a child."

Victoria’s face turned the color of ash. She turned desperately to her attorneys, but Marcus stepped forward, dropping a thick sheaf of printed documents onto the lawyer’s chest.

"Financial wire interception logs, encrypted chat transcripts detailing the extortion plot against Miss Miller, and forensic video footage from the pantry camera capturing the physical assault," Marcus recited smoothly. "Your license to practice law in this state will be revoked by noon, Counselor. I suggest you advise your client to keep her mouth shut."

The detectives stepped forward, gently but firmly taking Victoria by the arms.

"Nathan! You can't do this! I’ll destroy you! I’ll ruin your company! The board will never let you—" Victoria’s screams echoed off the high ceilings as she was dragged backward toward the foyer, the camera crew scrambling out of the way in sheer terror, realizing they had captured the fall of a socialite titan.

When the heavy front door finally clicked shut, sealing out the noise of the outside world, the dining room descended into a profound, peaceful quiet.

Lily looked up from her pancakes, blinking her big brown eyes. "Is the angry lady gone, Papa?"

Nathan exhaled a long, shaky breath, walking back to her chair and dropping down onto one knee so he was eye-level with our daughter.

"Yes, sweetheart," Nathan smiled softly, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "The angry lady is gone. And she’s never coming back."

He then looked up at me, standing across the table in my maid’s uniform. He stood up, walked over, and gently took my hand.

"Grace," Nathan said, his voice steady and full of a quiet, unshakable resolve. "Pack your things. You’re not staying in the staff quarters anymore. You and Lily are moving into the master suite with me. We have four years of lost time to make up for."

I looked at him, feeling the heavy burden of the past four years finally lift from my shoulders. But little did we know, Victoria’s arrest was only the first domino to fall. In the shadows of the corporate world, a far more dangerous player was watching—and he had just received Victoria’s emergency contingency files.
