Chapter 8 - THE ASHES OF THE EMPIRETwo weeks later, the boardrooms of Cole Global Industries looked very different.

Richard Sterling had been arrested and charged with federal extortion, kidnapping, corporate sabotage, and conspiracy. His shares in the company had been permanently seized by federal regulators and absorbed back into the corporate treasury, while his legal career was officially incinerated. Victoria, awaiting trial in a maximum-security holding facility, had officially lost her appeal for bail, her high-society friends abandoning her like rats from a sinking ship.
Inside the grand master suite of the Cole mansion, the morning sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, warming the polished hardwood floors.
I stood by the window, wearing a soft silk robe, watching Lily play with a brand-new set of wooden building blocks on the Persian rug. Her laughter rang out bright and clear—free of fear, free of shadows.
Arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind. A warm chin rested softly on my shoulder, and familiar lips pressed a gentle kiss against my neck.
"Penny for your thoughts," Nathan murmured, his arms tightening around me, pulling me back against his chest.
I leaned back into his embrace, closing my eyes and breathing in the familiar scent of cedar and rain. "I was just thinking about how fragile everything is. Three weeks ago, I was a terrified maid hiding in a kitchen. Now..."
"Now you’re home," Nathan whispered, turning me gently in his arms so I was facing him.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. My breath hitched.
"Nathan, what is this?"
"When we were twenty-three, before the world broke us apart, I promised you the moon and stars," Nathan said, his voice thick with emotion as he dropped down onto one knee right there on the rug. "I was too proud, too blind, and too busy chasing a ghost to realize that the only star I ever needed was already standing right in front of me."
He popped open the box. Inside lay a stunning, custom-designed diamond ring—not flashy or ostentatious, but elegant, timeless, and shining with a brilliant, fierce light.
"Grace Miller... will you marry me? For real this time? No secrets, no fear, no hiding from the world?"
Tears spilled over my lashes, hot and happy. I looked over at Lily, who had stopped playing with her blocks and was clapping her tiny hands together, squealing with joy.
"Yes, Papa! Say yes, Mommy!" Lily giggled.
I laughed through my tears, looking down into the eyes of the man who had fought through fire, corporate war, and betrayal to bring us home.

"Yes, Nathan," I whispered. "Yes."
As Nathan slid the ring onto my finger and pulled me into a deep, passionate kiss, I knew the past was finally behind us. Whatever the future held, we would face it together—as a family.
