Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW IN THE BOARDROOMThree days had passed since Victoria’s dramatic arrest. The media storm had been fierce, but Nathan’s legal team, led by Marcus, had ruthlessly managed the narrative, releasing the security footage of the assault to strategically selected outlets. Public sympathy had swung violently in our favor, branding Victoria as a predatory social climber and painting a heartbreaking picture of a reunited family.

Lily and I had officially moved into the master wing of the mansion. The staff had treated us not as domestic employees, but as royalty. Yet, despite the luxury, a lingering unease sat heavily in my chest.
That afternoon, Nathan was scheduled for an emergency board meeting at Cole Global Industries downtown. A hostile corporate raider had begun quietly buying up massive blocks of voting shares—a move that usually took months of quiet accumulation, but was happening with terrifying speed.
"Are you sure you don't want to come with us?" Nathan asked, adjusting his tie in the grand hallway mirror while Lily clung happily to his leg. "I can have security transport you both to my private box at the stadium, or anywhere else you'd like."
"We'll be fine here, Nathan," I smiled, adjusting my blouse. I had finally traded my maid’s uniform for civilian clothes—a simple navy dress Nathan had insisted on buying for me during a private boutique shopping spree the day before. "The estate is locked down tighter than a federal prison. Besides, Marcus is downstairs."
Nathan kissed the top of Lily’s head, then leaned down and kissed me softly on the lips. It was a gentle, grounding gesture that made my heart flutter just like it used to back when we were twenty-three, sitting on the hood of his old beat-up sedan.
"I’ll be back by six," Nathan promised. "We’re having dinner catered. Just the three of us."
As Nathan’s black armored SUV rolled down the long gravel driveway, I felt a strange prickle at the back of my neck. A cold premonition whispered that something was wrong.
Inside the sleek, glass-walled boardroom on the fortieth floor of Cole Global Industries, Nathan strode in with his usual commanding aura. The twelve members of the board of directors were already seated around the massive marble table. But there was an empty chair at the far end—a chair reserved for the mysterious primary stakeholder holding twenty-two percent of the voting shares.
"Gentlemen," Nathan said, taking his seat at the head of the table. "I called this emergency session to address the recent liquidity anomaly and stabilize our stock price following the public scandal. Let’s get straight to the audit reports."
The doors at the back of the boardroom swung open.
A tall, silver-haired man in an impeccably tailored Italian suit walked in. He had sharp, hawkish features, cold blue eyes, and an unmistakable smirk playing on his lips.
Nathan froze. The pen in his hand snapped clean in half.
"Hello, Nathan," the man said smoothly, pulling out the empty chair at the end of the table and sitting down. "Did you really think your old mentor would stay out of the game just because you built a shiny new toy?"
It was Richard Sterling—Victoria’s uncle, and the most ruthless corporate raider in the country.
"Richard," Nathan’s voice was venomous. "You’re trespassing. Your shares were frozen under the SEC investigation into your niece’s extortion plot."
Richard chuckled, leaning back and lacing his fingers together. "My shares, perhaps. But the voting rights associated with them were legally transferred to a blind trust forty-eight hours ago. And right now, Nathan... that blind trust represents twenty-two percent of this company. Which means, by corporate charter, I have the authority to call an immediate vote of no confidence in the CEO."
The entire boardroom erupted into anxious murmurs. Directors whispered among themselves, exchanging terrified glances.
"You can't do that," Nathan slammed his hand on the table. "You don't have the majority!"
"I don't need a majority to start a bloodbath, boy," Richard leaned forward, his eyes flashing with malicious triumph. "And besides... I’m not just here for your company."
Richard pulled a remote control from his pocket and pressed a button. The projector screen behind Nathan flickered to life, displaying a high-resolution satellite map of the Cole estate—followed by live security camera feeds of the mansion’s front gates.
"I’m here for your new little family, too," Richard smiled coldly. "Victoria sends her regards from holding. And she asked me to deliver a message to Grace: The game isn't over until everyone bleeds."
May you like
Nathan leaped out of his chair, overturning it entirely, his face contorted in pure, unadulterated fury. But before he could lunge across the table, Richard simply tapped his wristwatch and smiled.
"Too late, Nathan. The package has already been delivered."
