Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT AUDITThe private study of the Cole mansion smelled of aged leather, expensive bourbon, and old paper. It was a room where fortunes were made and lives were dismantled with a single stroke of a pen.

At 2:00 AM, the room was lit only by the amber glow of a desk lamp. Nathan sat behind his massive mahogany desk, staring at a thick manila folder. On the couch nearby, I sat holding a cup of lukewarm chamomile tea, while Lily finally slept soundly, wrapped in one of Nathan’s cashmere coats on the velvet sofa.
The door clicked open, and Marcus Vance, Nathan’s head of corporate security and personal legal fixer, stepped inside. Marcus looked tired, his tie loosened, holding a glowing tablet in his hand.
"Well?" Nathan didn't look up from the documents spread across his desk.
"It’s worse than you thought, Mr. Cole," Marcus said grimly, walking over and placing the tablet down. "Miss Sterling—excuse me, former fiancée Miss Sterling—didn't just pack her bags and leave quietly. Within twenty minutes of being escorted off the premises, she accessed a private corporate account and initiated a massive wire transfer."
Nathan’s head snapped up. His eyes narrowed dangerously. "Explain."
"She tried to siphon four million dollars into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands," Marcus reported, tapping the screen to bring up a series of financial logs. "Fortunately, our automated fraud protocols flagged it immediately because the account was linked to her prenuptial asset-shielding portfolio. I’ve frozen the transfer, but that’s not all."
Marcus cleared his throat, casting a cautious glance in my direction before looking back at Nathan.
"Digging deeper into her communications over the past three weeks, I found a series of encrypted messages between Victoria and a third party. Specifically, a senior partner at Sterling & Hayes Law Firm—her uncle."
"What were they discussing?" Nathan’s voice dropped an octave, the temperature in the room plummeting.
"They weren't just discussing your breakup, sir," Marcus said, scrolling down. "They were discussing custody. Three days ago, before this confrontation even happened, Victoria had already filed a preemptive, sealed petition in family court. She was setting up a legal trap to declare Grace an 'unfit, impoverished transient,' strip her of parental rights, and claim emergency guardianship of Lily."
My heart stopped. The teacup in my hand rattled against its saucer, spilling a few drops onto my knee. "Emergency guardianship? But... why would she care about Lily if she hates us?"
"Because of the trust, Grace," Nathan said, his voice cold and analytical, the ruthless businessman taking over. He stood up, walking slowly toward the window that overlooked the sprawling estate gardens. "When my grandfather died two years ago, he left a contingency clause in the family trust. Any direct blood heir born to the Cole line receives an immediate, independent trust fund of fifty million dollars upon verification at age four. Lily turned four yesterday."
The room spun. Fifty million dollars. All this time, I had thought Victoria’s malice was purely driven by jealousy over Nathan’s affections. But it was worse. It was greed. Absolute, bottomless greed.
"She knew," Nathan whispered, turning around, his fists clenched so tight his knuckles were stark white. "She found out about the trust provisions three weeks ago when she snooped through my legal archives. That’s why she cornered you in the pantry. That’s why she tried to break you."
"And that’s why she attacked us with the hockey stick," I added, a cold shiver running down my spine. "If Lily and I were... eliminated, or legally discredited, and Victoria married you, she could have maneuvered herself into a position to control the trust assets."
Nathan walked over to the sofa, kneeling beside sleeping Lily. He gently brushed a stray lock of dark brown hair from her forehead, his jaw working as he fought back a tidal wave of fury and guilt.
"She will never touch her," Nathan vowed, his voice a low, terrifying promise. "Marcus, I want a full forensic audit of every dime Victoria Sterling has touched since she moved into this house. I want her assets frozen, her corporate access revoked, and her uncle disbarred if he had any part in drafting that fraudulent custody petition."
"Consider it done, boss," Marcus said, turning toward the door. "What about the police report regarding the assault?"
Nathan looked back at me, his gaze softening with a heartbreaking tenderness before hardening again. "File attempted aggravated assault and child endangerment charges immediately. I want an arrest warrant issued before the sun comes up."
As Marcus stepped out of the study, closing the heavy oak door behind him, Nathan walked over to the couch and sat down beside me. He didn't say a word for a long time. He simply reached out, his warm, strong hand covering mine, gently tracing the bruise forming on my shoulder where Victoria’s blow had landed.
"I am so sorry, Grace," he whispered, his voice breaking. "I brought a monster into our lives. And I let her hurt the two people I love most in this world."
May you like
"You didn't know, Nathan," I said softly, tears finally spilling over my lashes. "I kept it a secret for four years. I broke your trust first."
"You were protecting our daughter," Nathan said fiercely, lifting my chin so I had to look directly into his eyes. "And starting tomorrow, we are going to fix every single mistake of the past. Together."
