Chapter 14 - THE MARKSMAN IN THE MISTThe fog rolled in thick off the harbor, swallowing the manicured lawns of the Cole estate in a ghostly white shroud. Nathan moved silently across the wet grass, hugging the shadow of the tall hedges, his weapon raised and ready.

At the base of the grand wrought-iron security gates, something small rested directly on the cobblestone path: a sleek, black leather briefcase.

Nathan approached slowly, his eyes scanning the tree line beyond the fence. The wind howled through the autumn branches, carrying the distant sound of crashing waves.

He reached down, popped the latches of the briefcase, and threw the lid open.

Inside sat a vintage, silver pocket watch—the exact pocket watch Nathan’s grandfather had given him when he was a boy, which Nathan had hocked years ago during his poorest days to buy medicine for his dying mother. And resting right beside it was a high-resolution, time-stamped photograph taken just ten minutes earlier through the kitchen window: a picture of me helping Lily spell her words at the kitchen table.

A cold bead of sweat tracked down the back of Nathan’s neck. They weren't just outside the gates; they had been looking right through the glass.

“Impressive, isn't it, Nathan?”

A voice hissed from the built-in intercom speaker mounted on the brick gatepost.

Nathan whirled around, leveling his weapon toward the speaker. "Show yourself, you coward! Who are you?"

“Oh, I think you know exactly who I am,” the voice chuckled darkly—a raspy, distorted sound that sent a chill through the night air. “You thought you could bury me in the past, take my innovations, build your golden cage, and play family man while I rotted in the shadows? The game isn't over, Cole. The board is reset. And your little daughter’s trust fund? It’s already been flagged for hostile liquidation.”

"If you touch my family, I will hunt you to the ends of the earth," Nathan snarled, his voice trembling with pure rage.

“Save your breath, Nathan. Look up.”

Nathan’s eyes darted upward toward the high perimeter wall. Across the street, parked in the heavy shadows of an unlit utility van, a laser sighting dot flickered red against the brick wall right beside Nathan’s head.

Before Nathan could dive, a muffled crack split the night air.

BANG.
