Chapter 9 - Ashes and EmbersThree days after the fall of Marco Salvatore, the Bellandi estate returned to an eerie, quiet peace. The snow outside melted under a pale, watery winter sun, turning the limestone paths into slush.

In the grand study, the shattered glass had been replaced, the mahogany desk polished to a mirror shine.

Philip Hastings was gone—not dead, but locked away in a federal maximum-security penitentiary halfway across the country, stripped of his wealth, his status, and his freedom. The four million dollars of debt had been wiped clean, absorbed back into the legitimate holdings of the Bellandi empire.

Anna sat in the leather chair opposite the desk, staring out the tall windows toward the iron gates.

The heavy double doors opened, and Vincent walked in. He didn't use the wheelchair anymore; his gait was steady, though a slight limp betrayed the lingering pain of his injuries. He set a thick manila folder on the desk and pushed it across toward her.

Anna looked down at it. "What's this?"

"Your freedom," Vincent said quietly, pulling out a chair and sitting down opposite her. "An annulment. Signed, sealed, and legally binding. Along with a new identity, a passport, and a bank account in Zurich with enough capital to start entirely fresh anywhere in the world. Paris, London, Tokyo—wherever you want."

Anna stared at the folder. The paper represented everything she had wanted when she first stepped through those iron gates six weeks ago: an escape from the violence, the blood, and the shadow of the crime syndicate.

Slowly, she looked up, meeting his sharp, gray eyes.

"And what about you?" she asked softly. "What happens to the king now that his throne is secure?"

Vincent leaned back, resting his arms on the desk. "I clean house. I bring the family back into legitimate commerce, away from the blood money. It will take time, but the war is over."

"And you don't need a wife in public anymore."

"I never needed one," Vincent corrected, a faint, ghost of a smile touching his lips. "I just happened to find one who was tougher than most of my capos."

Anna reached out her hand, resting her fingertips on the manila folder. She traced the edge of the paper. The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken words, unhealed wounds, and a strange, undeniable bond forged in the fires of betrayal.

"And if I don't want the passport?" Anna asked, her voice barely louder than a whisper.

Vincent’s breath hitched. For the first time since she had known him, the cold, impenetrable armor of the crime boss cracked entirely, revealing the man beneath.

"Why would you stay, Anna?" he asked, his voice rough. "This world is dark. There are ghosts here."

Anna stood up from her chair, walked around the mahogany desk, and stopped right beside him, looking down into his striking gray eyes.

"Because," Anna said, a fierce, brilliant smile curving her lips, "every empire needs a queen who isn't afraid of the dark."
