Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The silence that fell over the Grand Lydian ballroom was absolute. In high society, gossip traveled like wildfire, but shock traveled like lightning. Celeste Cross’s warning hung in the air, cold and futile, while Nathaniel stared at Miles’s stubborn chin and Grace’s distinct gray eyes.

"Celeste," Nathaniel said, his voice dropping an octave into that flat, dangerous register his board of directors feared most. "Move."

"Nathaniel, think of your future," his mother hissed, stepping forward to block his path to Elena. "Vivien’s family represents the merger. Look at this... this circus. You cannot possibly validate a claim like this without DNA tests, without a discreet legal team—"

"A legal team?" Nathaniel’s laugh was harsh. He looked past his mother to Vivien. Her ivory silk dress seemed suddenly like armor, her smile rigid and strained.

"Nathaniel, she's right," Vivien intervened, her tone a masterclass in controlled desperation. "If this woman—if these children—are yours, we handle it quietly. Not here. Not in front of the press."

"They are mine," Nathaniel said, the realization settling into his bones with terrifying certainty. He looked at Elena. Her posture remained unyielding, though her fingers gripped the edge of her blue clutch so tightly her knuckles were white. "You knew," he said softly. "When you left five years ago... you knew."

"I didn't invite myself here, Nathaniel," Elena replied, her voice steady. "Your secretary sent the embossed invitation to my studio apartment in Brooklyn. I came because I thought closing old doors was better than leaving them ajar. I didn't know you were throwing a coronation."

Miles tugged on Elena's dress. "Mommy, can we have cupcakes now? The man with the gray eyes is staring."

A sharp chuckle escaped a senator near the edge of the room, instantly swallowed by a cough. Nathaniel didn't care about the senators, the press, or the social columns. He reached out, his hand hovering inches from Miles's hair before pulling back, terrified of frightening a child who carried his own blood.

"We are going to my private suite upstairs," Nathaniel announced, turning to face the frozen crowd. "The party is over."
