Chapter 18 - The Final Cleansing

The board room of Cross Industries had never seen such complete and utter subjugation.
The remaining corrupt board members who had once aided Celeste and Jonathan sat in terrified silence around the obsidian table. Nathaniel stood at the head of the room, flanked by two armed federal prosecutors and his chief legal counsel.
"Effective immediately," Nathaniel announced, his voice echoing off the glass walls, "every individual who conspired to conceal corporate fraud, manipulate voting trusts, or endanger my family is permanently terminated without severance, pension, or legal defense indemnity."
No one raised a hand. No one spoke.
"The Cross family dynasty is no longer built on secrecy, intimidation, or corporate backstabbing," Nathaniel continued, his gray eyes sweeping across the cowed executives. "It is built on absolute transparency, strength, and accountability. If anyone here disagrees, your resignation letter is on the desk before you leave."
As the meeting adjourned, the executives cleared the room in record time, leaving Nathaniel alone at the massive table.
The heavy mahogany doors opened one last time. Celeste Cross walked in, looking older, smaller, stripped of the terrifying armor of pearls and arrogance that had once terrorized his childhood.
"Are you going to send me to prison too, Nathaniel?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
Nathaniel looked at the woman who had birthed him, the architect of his motherless childhood, the woman who had tried to steal his children's future.

"No, Mother," Nathaniel said quietly. "Prison is for criminals who still matter. You are going to your estate in the Vermont mountains. You will live out your days in absolute comfort, with zero access to corporate communications, zero visitors without my direct approval, and zero influence over anyone else's life."
Celeste stared at him, tears welling in her eyes—not of remorse, but of profound, crushing defeat. She turned and walked out without a word.
