Chapter 15 - The Miraculous Swerve

On Route 9, time seemed to slow down to an agonizing crawl.
Inside the hurtling SUV, the driver fought the steering wheel with every ounce of his strength, shouting back to the nanny, "Brace the kids! Head down! Cover them!"
The massive steel bumper of the logging truck loomed larger through the windshield by the microsecond. There was no stopping. There was only impact.
With a desperate, superhuman jerk of the wheel, the driver threw the heavy armored vehicle into a violent skid, aiming the rear quarter-panel toward a wide, muddy drainage ditch instead of a direct head-on collision with the timber logs.
CRASH.
The sound of twisting metal, shattering safety glass, and tearing earth echoed across the valley. The SUV flipped onto its side, sliding thirty yards through the mud before slamming violently into a thick cluster of willow trees and coming to a dead stop in a cloud of acrid white smoke.
Silence followed—heavy, terrifying, and absolute.
Inside the overturned cabin, Miles groaned, shaking his head as dust settled over his small shoulders. "Mommy?" he whispered, his gray eyes blinking against the gloom.
Grace and Sophie began to cry, small whimpers cutting through the ringing in the air.

Up front, the driver and the protection officer were battered and bleeding, struggling against their jammed seatbelts.
"Get the kids out!" the officer yelled, kicking frantically at the jammed rear door until the heavy steel hinge finally gave way with a screech.
