Chapter 13 - The Broken Brake Line

Two weeks later, the crisp autumn air of upstate New York turned sharp and biting. The sprawling country estate was quiet, bathed in the soft amber glow of early evening.

Elena kissed the triplets goodbye as the private security detail loaded them into the armored black Mercedes SUV. They were heading into town for a routine pediatric dental checkup, accompanied by two trained protection officers and their nanny. Nathaniel was finishing a multi-state conference call at the main office and was scheduled to meet them at the clinic in downtown Manhattan.

Elena watched from the front porch as the SUV crunched down the gravel driveway, disappearing into the dense line of maples and oaks bordering the estate road.

An uneasy feeling, cold and sharp like a needle, twisted deep in her chest. She pulled her wool cardigan tighter around her shoulders, turning back toward the house.

Ten miles away, on a winding, isolated stretch of county highway, the black SUV rounded a sweeping bend at fifty miles per hour.

In the back seat, Miles was busy drawing another picture of a man with gray eyes, while Grace and Sophie giggled over a picture book.

Up front, the driver—a veteran private security specialist—suddenly slammed his foot onto the brake pedal. Nothing. The pedal dropped all the way to the floorboard with a sickening, hollow hiss. There was no resistance, no friction, only the terrifying rush of momentum.

"Brakes are gone!" the driver shouted over the children's laughter, yanking the emergency handbrake and desperately downshifting.

Ahead of them, a massive logging truck had suddenly stalled sideways across both lanes of the narrow highway, blocking every inch of the road.
