Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Takeover

The fallout was swift and merciless. Within two hours of the board meeting, the certified paternity documents and the grandfather's secret trust were filed with the New York Supreme Court.

Jonathan Vance’s proxy votes were declared null and void, and his attempt at a hostile takeover crumbled into an SEC investigation for insider collusion. Celeste Cross, stripped of her executive privileges and voting influence within the parent company, was formally retired by unanimous board consent—her decades-long reign over the family dynasty terminated in a single afternoon.

By evening, the financial markets had closed, and the news broke across every major network: Billionaire Nathaniel Cross Retains Control, Unveils Secret Heirs and Restructures Family Trust.

Back in the penthouse, the chaos of the day had finally faded. The triplets were asleep in their new nursery, worn out from exploring the sprawling apartment and eating far too many chocolate-chip cookies provided by a repentant kitchen staff.

Nathaniel stood on the terrace, a glass of scotch in his hand, watching the twinkling lights of Manhattan stretch out endlessly beneath them.

Footsteps approached softly behind him. A warm wool blanket draped over his shoulders, and Elena stood beside him, leaning against the glass railing.

"Your mother left for her estate in the Hamptons," Elena said quietly. "She refused to say goodbye to the children."

"She'll come around when she realizes she needs visiting privileges," Nathaniel murmured, taking a sip of his drink. He turned to look at her, his expression softening entirely. "You planned this, didn't you? Not the children—the trust. You knew about my grandfather's contingency plan all along."

Elena smiled faintly, looking out at the skyline. "Your grandfather was a brilliant, lonely old man. When your mother threw me out five years ago, he was the only one who met me in secret at the train station. He gave me the documents, a modest safety net to keep us afloat, and told me to raise his grandchildren away from the wolves until the time was right."

"And you waited five years in Brooklyn, working a normal job, raising my children alone, while I was drowning in boardrooms," Nathaniel said, his voice raw with a mixture of awe and profound regret.

"I wanted them to know who their father was when they were old enough to understand what it cost," Elena replied, turning her gray eyes to meet his. "And I wanted you to be a man strong enough to stand up to your mother before I brought them back to you."

Nathaniel reached out, his hand gently cupping her cheek, his thumb brushing away a stray lock of chestnut hair. "I spent five years thinking I had everything a man could possibly want. I was wrong. I was living in a cage."
