Chapter 10 - A NEW DAWN FOR SOPHIE
Six months later.
The ocean breeze blew softly across the coastal garden of Mark’s new home, miles away from the city and the dark memories of the past year. The bright blue waves washed over the golden sand below the cliffs, where the sun shone brightly in an unclouded sky.
Sophie ran across the lush green grass, laughing loudly as her new golden retriever puppy chased after her fluttering red ribbon. Her hair had grown back thick and shiny, her bright laugh ringing clear and healthy through the summer air.
Mark sat on the wooden porch bench, watching her with a warm mug of coffee in his hands. Beside him lay the morning newspaper. On the front page was a small headline: EVELYN VANCE SENTENCED TO THREE CONSECUTIVE LIFE TERMS WITHOUT PAROLE.
He folded the paper and tossed it into the recycling bin, closing that dark chapter of their lives forever.
"Daddy! Look!" Sophie called out, running up the porch steps holding a brightly painted wooden birdhouse she had spent the morning working on. "I made it for the bluebirds in the oak tree!"
"It’s beautiful, sweetheart," Mark said, lifting her into a big, tight hug and kissing her cheek. "The prettiest birdhouse in the whole world."

Sophie wrapped her small arms around his neck, resting her head against his chest—no longer shaking, no longer afraid, but completely safe in the arms of the father who had fought through hell to protect her.
"I love you, Daddy," she whispered.
