Chapter 4 - THE POISON IN THE BLOODSTREAM

Before Mark could process the detective's words, Sophie began to shiver violently in his arms. Her skin felt suddenly burning hot to the touch, and her eyelids fluttered weakly.

"Daddy..." Sophie whimpered, her lips turning a faint, alarming shade of blue. "My tummy hurts so bad... like fire..."

Panic seized Mark’s chest. "Sophie! Sophie, look at me!" He looked up at Detective Vance, his eyes wide with terror. "Call an ambulance! Right now!"

Within fifteen minutes, the pediatric intensive care unit at Mercy General Hospital was a frenzy of medical staff. Dr. Evans, the chief toxicologist, rushed into the private room where Mark sat holding his daughter’s pale hand.

"Mr. Sterling," Dr. Evans said gravely, pulling up a series of blood lab results on his tablet. "We found something alarming in Sophie’s system. It’s not just physical trauma."

Mark’s heart sank into his stomach. "What is it?"

"Thallium," Dr. Evans replied, lowering his voice. "An odorless, tasteless heavy metal often used in vintage rat poisons. It accumulates slowly in the human body over time. It causes severe abdominal pain, muscle weakness, hair thinning, and eventual neurological collapse. If it goes undetected for more than a month, it's fatal."

Mark’s knuckles turned white as he grabbed the edge of the hospital bed. "How long has it been in her system?"

"Based on the concentration levels, she’s been receiving micro-doses for at least three weeks," Dr. Evans explained. "Every day, someone was lacing her food or drink with small amounts of this toxin. It was designed to look like a mysterious, lingering childhood illness."

Mark closed his eyes as a wave of pure rage washed over him. Vanessa hadn't just been abusing Sophie behind closed doors—she was methodically, slowly murdering his six-year-old child right under his nose, laying the groundwork to claim she died of a rare disease before moving on to Mark.

"Is there an antidote?" Mark demanded, his voice trembling with emotion.

"We caught it just in time," Dr. Evans reassured him. "We’re administering Prussian Blue to flush the toxin out. She will recover, Mark. But she needs absolute rest."

Mark kissed his daughter’s burning forehead, then stood up and turned to Detective Vance, who was standing at the doorway. "Keep two armed officers at this door. Nobody comes in or out without your personal clearance."

"Where are you going, Mark?" Vance asked.

"To Saint Jude’s Sanatorium," Mark said coldly. "It’s time to end this."
