Chapter 5 - THE ENEMY INSIDE THE EMPIRE
The heavy rain pounded relentlessly against the windshield of Mark’s SUV as he sped toward the outskirts of the city. His phone buzzed on the dashboard. He clicked the speakerphone button.
"Mark, it's Richard," came the frantic voice of his long-time business partner and CFO, Richard Sterling. "I just saw the police reports! Is Sophie okay? Is Vanessa really under investigation?"
"Sophie is in the hospital, poisoned with thallium," Mark said, his voice clipped and cold. "And Vanessa is a fugitive."
There was a heavy pause on the other end of the line. "Dear God... Mark, I’m so sorry. I had no idea. But listen, something strange just happened at the corporate office. Twenty minutes ago, someone used your administrative master keycard to access our offshore investment accounts. Fifteen million dollars was just transferred to a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands!"
Mark slammed his hand against the steering wheel. "She stole my private clearance keycard before she ran!"
"Mark, that's not all," Richard continued, his voice dropping to an anxious whisper. "I started digging into the transaction logs. The shell company that received the funds... it wasn't created yesterday. It was set up three months ago—the exact week you and Vanessa got married. And the co-signatory on that account isn't just Vanessa..."
Mark’s blood ran cold. "Who is the second name on the account, Richard?"
"It’s your ex-wife's brother... Julian," Richard revealed. "Mark, Vanessa didn't meet you by accident at that charity gala last year. She was brought into your life on purpose. Someone inside your inner circle fed her information about your wealth, your schedule, and Sophie’s routines."

"Keep tracking the money trail, Richard," Mark ordered. "I’m at Saint Jude’s now. I’m going to get the truth from the only man who knows who Vanessa really is."
