Chapter 2 - THE HIDDEN CAMERA BEHIND THE NURSERY WALLS

"You... you don't know what you're talking about," Vanessa stammered, her voice stripped of its smooth composure. She backed away toward the hallway, her eyes darting toward the front door. "Arthur had a heart condition! The police cleared me! It was an absolute tragedy!"
"The police cleared you because you bribed the local coroner, Vanessa," Mark said, pulling his smartphone from his pocket. "But that was eight years ago. You thought you were smarter than everyone else. You thought I was just another rich, grieving widower looking for a mother for my daughter. You thought I was blind."
Mark tapped the screen of his phone and turned the display toward her. A high-definition video feed began to play.
The timestamp on the screen read yesterday afternoon at 2:15 PM. On the screen, Vanessa’s face was twisted in a grimace of pure rage. She was dragging six-year-old Sophie by her hair across the nursery carpet, shoving her into a cramped, windowless storage closet under the staircase. The audio was crystal clear.
“If you scream, I’ll make sure your father suffers an accident on his way home from the office,” Vanessa’s recorded voice hissed through the phone speakers. “Just like my first husband. One little drop in his coffee every morning, and poof... heart failure.”
Vanessa fell back against the wall, gasping for air as if the oxygen had been sucked out of the room. Her carefully crafted persona of the glamorous, devoted stepmother disintegrated in a matter of seconds, revealing the predator beneath.
"You put cameras in the house?" she whispered, horror dawning in her eyes.
"Every room," Mark replied coldly. "The moment I noticed Sophie flinching every time you reached out to touch her, I turned this house into a surveillance zone. Every threat, every hit, every single word you’ve spoken to my daughter for the last seventy-two hours has been transmitted directly to a secure cloud server—and to the desk of Detective Vance at the precinct."
Sirens suddenly wailed in the distance, their red and blue lights flashing rhythmically against the living room windows.

Vanessa’s shock instantly morphed into feral fury. "You think you’ve won, Mark?" she spat, lunging toward the marble side table where her designer handbag lay. "You have no idea who you're dealing with! You think Arthur was my only victim?"
Before Mark could react, Vanessa grabbed her bag, pulled out a small glass vial, and hurled it violently onto the floor between them.
