Chapter 13 - THE EYE IN THE SHADOWS

Mark pulled the heavy steel box onto the dusty floorboards. Painted across the top lid in white stencil was a single symbol: an intricate black lily surrounded by an inverted triangle.
"The Black Lily," Vance whispered, his face draining of all color. "Dear God..."
"You know what this is?" Mark asked, using the crowbar to force the rusted lock mechanism.
"It's not a myth..." Vance murmured, stepping back. "For twenty years, federal agencies have been quietly tracking an elite, international syndicate known as The Black Lily. They don't rob banks or kidnap executives for petty ransom. They place highly trained female operatives—black widows—into the lives of ultra-wealthy men. They manipulate, poison, steal, and liquidate empires from the inside out."
The lock snapped open with a metallic bang. Mark lifted the heavy lid. Inside lay three encrypted flash drives, a thick ledger written in coded numeric sequences, and Clara’s real medical records from four years ago.
Mark grabbed the medical binder and flipped to the final page. The toxicological screen was stamped in bold red ink: LETHAL CONCENTRATION OF ORGANOPHOSPHATE TOXINS.
Clara hadn't died of leukemia. She had been systematically, slowly murdered over two years, exactly like Sophie was being poisoned with thallium.
Suddenly, Mark’s phone buzzed with an emergency notification from his new home’s smart security system. A red alert flashed on his screen: PERIMETER BREACH — NURSERY BALCONY.
Mark clicked open the live camera feed.

On the screen, the two private guards he had left outside were slumped unconscious on the patio grass. Inside Sophie’s room, a figure dressed in dark tactical gear stood over the sleeping child. The figure turned slowly toward the hidden camera lens, reached into a pocket, and held up a handwritten sign right in front of the lens:
“HAND OVER THE BLACK LILY LEDGER IN THIRTY MINUTES, OR SOPHIE REJOINS HER MOTHER.”
