Chapter 8 - THE TRAP IS SPRUNG

"You won't get away with this, Evelyn," Mark said, slowly taking a half-step sideways to place himself between the gun and Arthur’s bed. "The hospital is surrounded by police. Detective Vance is on his way up right now."

"Vance is currently chasing a decoy car I set off on the interstate ten miles away," Evelyn laughed, her eyes gleaming with manic triumph. "By the time he realizes he's chasing a hired stunt driver, this building will be in flames. An unfortunate electrical fire, Mark. A tragic accident that claims the lives of a grieving husband, his paralyzed predecessor, and destroys all medical records."

She raised the gun, her finger tightening around the trigger. "Say goodbye to your precious Sophie, Mark."

BANG!

A deafening shot shattered the quiet room—but it didn't come from Evelyn’s weapon.

The heavy glass window behind Evelyn exploded inward in a shower of sharp fragments. A tactical flashlight beam cut through the darkness, blinding her. Evelyn shrieked in pain as a high-powered stun dart struck her shoulder, sending a surge of electricity through her body. She collapsed onto the floor, dropping the handgun, twitching violently.

Heavy boots thundered down the hallway as Detective Vance and a full tactical SWAT team burst into the room, rifles raised.

"DON'T MOVE! HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!" officers roared, pinning Evelyn to the floor and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

Mark exhaled a deep, shuddering breath, leaning against the wall for support. Detective Vance walked over, kicking Evelyn's discarded weapon away.

"You cut it a little close, Vance," Mark rasped, catching his breath.

"I told you I had officers tracking your phone's GPS," Vance replied, looking down at the squirming, screaming woman on the floor. "We intercepted her secondary getaway vehicle twenty minutes ago. It's over, Evelyn. Or should I say... former Mrs. Vance."
