Chapter 7 - THE TWIN SISTER IN THE SHADOWS

Mark hit play on the digital voice recorder. A woman's chilling voice filled the quiet hospital room—a voice that sounded identical to Vanessa's, yet darker, more sinister.

“If anyone is listening to this tape,” the recording began, “then Arthur has finally succeeded in hiding this device. My name is not Vanessa Vance. Vanessa was my identical twin sister. Eight years ago, Vanessa tried to leave her abusive husband, Arthur. But I couldn't let her walk away from his fortune. I killed my sister, took her identity, poisoned Arthur to keep him silent, and buried the real Vanessa in an unmarked grave in upstate New York.”

Mark stared at the recorder in utter shock. The woman living in his house, the woman who had hugged his daughter, who had kissed him every night for a year... was an imposter, a cold-blooded murderer who had stolen her own twin sister's life!

The recording continued: “For eight years, I have lived as Vanessa. But Arthur’s money is running out. My new target is Mark Sterling. His grief over his late wife makes him vulnerable. His daughter, Sophie, will be the leverage. Once I control his assets, Mark will suffer the same fate as Arthur...”

A cold, metallic click echoed from the doorway behind Mark.

"You always were too curious for your own good, Mark," a voice purred from the shadows.

Mark spun around. Evelyn—standing in a black trench coat, her hair wet from the rain—stepped into the room. In her right hand, she held a sleek, silver handgun fitted with a suppressor, pointed directly at Mark’s chest.

"Evelyn," Mark said, his voice remarkably steady despite the barrel aimed at his heart. "It’s over. The police know everything. They know about Arthur, they know about the thallium, and they know you murdered your own twin sister."

Evelyn chuckled, a sound devoid of any human warmth. "The police know nothing until they find a body, Mark. And unfortunately for you, tonight, both you and my dear husband Arthur are going to suffer a fatal medical accident in this forgotten wing of the asylum."
