Chapter 9 - THE TANGLED WEB UNRAVELS

The morning sun finally broke through the heavy rain clouds, casting warm golden light over the Mercy General Hospital wing. In the private room, Sophie was sitting up in bed, color slowly returning to her rosy cheeks as she happily munched on a bowl of warm strawberry oatmeal.
"Daddy, is the mean lady really gone?" Sophie asked softly, looking up at Mark with big, brown, trusting eyes.
"She’s gone, sweetie," Mark said gently, stroking her soft hair. "She’s never, ever coming back. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. I promise you."
At the doorway, Detective Vance signaled for Mark to step outside into the hall. Mark gave Sophie a reassuring smile, kissed her cheek, and walked out into the corridor.
"We just finished the preliminary interrogation," Vance reported, holding a thick case file. "Evelyn is facing a lifetime of charges: attempted murder of a minor, attempted murder of two spouses, identity theft, grand larceny, and first-degree murder for the death of her sister, the real Vanessa."
"What about the insider who helped her?" Mark asked, remembering the offshore bank account. "My business partner, Richard?"
Vance shook his head. "That was the final twist, Mark. Richard wasn't in on it. Evelyn forged his digital signature using a sophisticated keylogger she installed on his home laptop during a dinner party at your house six months ago. She was planning to frame Richard for the embezzlement after you died."
Mark closed his eyes, feeling an overwhelming wave of relief. The web of deceit that had threatened to destroy his entire life was completely unraveling, exposing the monster at its core while clearing the innocent people around him.

"And Arthur?" Mark asked. "How is he?"
"The state medical team moved him to a top-tier rehabilitation university hospital," Vance said with a smile. "Now that the toxic regimen Evelyn was secretly administering to keep him paralyzed has stopped, the doctors believe he may regain his ability to speak and walk over the next year. He saved your life by hiding that voice recorder, Mark."
