Chapter 10 - THE KNOCK AT THE DOORThe sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the Pacific sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and deep crimson.

The air turned crisp, carrying the cool scent of evening ocean mist.

"Dad! Dinner's ready!" Lily called out, running up the back porch steps with Chloe and Maya right behind her, their cheeks flushed and smiling.

"Coming, girls," I smiled, setting my coffee cup down and standing up to follow them inside into the warm, brightly lit kitchen.

We sat down together around the wooden dining table—just an ordinary family sharing a simple, quiet meal. No secrets. No locked doors. No hidden monsters in the walls.

For the first time in years, I felt a profound, unshakable sense of peace settle deep into my bones.

Then, right as we were passing the plates around for dessert, a sharp, distinct sound cut through the quiet hum of the house.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Three slow, deliberate raps on the front door.

Everyone at the table froze. The laughter died instantly. Maya’s fork clattered softly against her plate. Chloe gripped my sleeve with trembling fingers, her eyes wide with sudden fear.

I looked toward the hallway leading to the front entrance.

It was 8:15 on a Tuesday night. We didn't expect any visitors. We lived at the end of a private private road, miles away from town.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Again. Louder this time.

"Dad..." Lily whispered, her voice shaking slightly. "Who's that?"

I stood up slowly from the table, my heart beginning to hammer against my ribs. I walked out of the kitchen, crossed the hardwood floor of the living room, and approached the front door.

I peered through the small glass peephole.

Standing on the porch, half-hidden in the deep evening shadows, was a young boy of about seven or eight years old, wearing an oversized gray sweatshirt, clutching a small, battered leather suitcase in his tiny hands.

He slowly lifted his face toward the peephole, revealing a pair of familiar, piercing eyes that mirrored my own.

And then, his muffled voice drifted clearly through the heavy wood of the door:

"Dad... You forgot about us."
