Chapter 13 - THE SIEGE OF THE COASTAL HOUSE"Get down! All of you, get into the back hallway!" I ordered, my voice dropping into a sharp, commanding register born of pure paternal panic.

Maya grabbed Lily and Chloe by the hands, pulling them away from the windows toward the reinforced interior corridor. Leo moved with chilling efficiency, snapping the latches of his suitcase open further to reveal not clothes, but a compact, encrypted satellite communicator and a set of heavy door-jamming wedges.
"They're using thermal imaging drones," Leo muttered, tossing me a small, heavy black device. "Plug that into the main circuit breaker box in the utility closet. It scrambles local frequency tracking so they can't pinpoint exact heartbeats through the walls."
"Where did you learn all of this?" I asked, grabbing the device.
"Sector Four was a tactical training ground," Leo replied without looking up. "Now go!"
I sprinted toward the utility closet, plugged the scrambler into the breaker panel, and watched as a small green light blinked furiously to life. Returning to the living room, the heavy oak front door shuddered violently under the impact of a battering ram.
CRASH.
The deadbolt cracked. Splinters of wood exploded inward across the hardwood floor.
"They're breaching!" Maya yelled from the hallway.
"Stay back!" I shouted, grabbing a heavy wooden floor lamp as an improvised weapon, positioning myself in front of the hallway entrance.
The front door swung wide open.
Through the doorway stepped three figures clad head-to-toe in matte-black tactical gear, night-vision goggles glowing an eerie green in the darkness. They weren't police officers. They moved with the cold, calculated precision of private military contractors.
"Target secured in sector. Sweep the perimeter," the lead operative barked through a distorted voice modulator.
I didn't wait. I hurled the heavy wooden lamp straight at the lead operator's chest. It caught him off guard, stumbling him backward into the doorframe.
"Dad, duck!" Leo shouted.
A sharp, zip-like sound cut through the air. A high-voltage taser dart embedded itself deep into the drywall inches from my ear, spitting blue electrical sparks.
The second operative raised a weapon toward me, but before he could pull the trigger, a small metal cylinder rolled across the floor between his boots.
It was a flash-bang grenade Leo had pulled from his suitcase.
BANG!
A blinding wall of white magnesium light and a deafening shockwave detonated in the entryway. The tactical operators screamed out, dropping their weapons and clutching their ears, temporarily blinded and disoriented.

"Move, move, move!" I roared, grabbing Lily and Chloe while Maya and Leo covered our flanks.
We bolted out the back kitchen door into the freezing coastal night, diving into the thick, protective shadows of the pine forest behind our house.
