Chapter 8 - THE REBELLION FROM WITHINThe tip of the needle pressed against the skin at the base of my neck. A sharp, burning pain flared outward, sending white-hot lightning bolts shooting down my spine.

I screamed—a raw, guttural sound echoing off the concrete walls of the underground laboratory.

"Hold him tighter, Emily!" Dr. Thorne commanded, her eyes fixed eagerly on the plunger of the syringe.

Suddenly, the heavy steel security door at the far end of the lab slammed open with a deafening CRASH.

"FBI! FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"

A barrage of blinding tactical flashlights flooded the room, accompanied by the deafening roar of tactical boots hitting the floor and the unmistakable sound of multiple assault rifles clicking off safety switches.

Dr. Thorne froze, the syringe hovering inches from my neck.

Emily gasped, spinning around toward the doorway.

Stepping through the smoke with his service weapon drawn, tactical gear gleaming under the emergency lights, was Detective Vance—only now, he wasn't wearing a local sheriff’s badge. He wore a heavy black vest stamped with bold federal lettering across the chest.

"Dr. Aris Thorne, you are under arrest for federal human experimentation, corporate conspiracy, and kidnapping," Vance shouted, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Drop the needle or you will be fired upon!"

Dr. Thorne panicked, her hand trembling. "Shoot them! Mara, stop them!"

Mara lunged toward the nearest federal agent with her knife raised, but before she could take two steps, a small, familiar figure darted out from behind Vance’s legs.

It was Lily.

And right beside her, supported by a female social worker, was little Chloe, wrapped in a warm hospital blanket, her eyes wide and fierce.

"Mara, stop!" Lily called out, her three-year-old voice ringing clearly through the tense, silent room.

Mara stopped dead in her tracks. The knife slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the concrete floor. She stared at Lily, her cold exterior cracking for the first time.

"Lily..." Mara whispered.

"Don't do it," Chloe added weakly, stepping forward from the group of agents. Her voice was thin, but filled with a startling, unmistakable strength. "They're lying to us, Mara. They always lied."

Dr. Thorne dropped the syringe, raising her hands slowly into the air, glaring venomously at the agents closing in around her. "You fools... You have no idea what you're destroying."

"Save the speech for a federal judge, Doctor," Vance said coldly, nodding to two agents who rushed forward, slamming heavy steel handcuffs onto Dr. Thorne’s wrists.

Another pair of agents grabbed Emily. She didn't fight back this time. Her face was completely blank, her eyes fixed on me as they dragged her away from my chair.

"Ryan..." she whispered as she passed me. "They'll never let you keep them. You don't know what's coming."

"Get her out of my sight," I choked out, my body trembling from the residual shock of the needle.

An agent rushed forward with a pair of bolt cutters, snapping the heavy steel shackles off my wrists and ankles. I collapsed forward onto my hands and knees, gasping for air, clutching the back of my neck where the needle had nearly punctured my spine.

Then, two small pairs of arms wrapped tightly around my neck.

I looked up. Lily and Chloe were kneeling beside me on the cold concrete floor, burying their faces into my shoulders, crying tears of relief.

I pulled them both into my arms, holding them as tightly as humanly possible, finally safe in the warmth of a reality that, for the first time in my life, was entirely our own.
