Chapter 9 - THE UNLOCKED FILESSix months later.

The nightmare at Blackwood Lake had become a distant headline on the evening news—a shocking exposé on illegal corporate genetics, underground surrogate trafficking, and the dismantling of Dr. Thorne’s shadowy syndicate.
Emily was currently awaiting trial in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, facing multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole. Dr. Thorne and her primary associates were locked away in solitary confinement, their underground laboratory sealed off with reinforced concrete and demolished by federal decree.
And my life? My life had completely transformed.
I sold the big, hollow, expensive house with its haunted service passages. We moved across the country to a quiet, sunlit coastal town in the Pacific Northwest—a modest, warm home with large windows overlooking the crashing ocean waves. No hidden walls. No secret rooms. Just open space, sunlight, and truth.
I sat on the wooden back porch, holding a cup of hot coffee in my hands.
On the lawn below, Lily and Chloe were chasing each other through the tall grass, their high-pitched laughter carrying on the salty ocean breeze. Chloe had put on weight; the pale, bruised, skeletal ghost from the wall was gone, replaced by a vibrant, healthy little girl with bright, curious eyes.
And Mara? After extensive psychological evaluation and the dismantling of Dr. Thorne’s conditioning, Mara—whose real name turned out to be Maya—had chosen to stay with us. She was older, wiser, and slowly learning what it meant to be part of a real, loving family.
My phone buzzed on the wooden patio table.
It was an email notification from the federal prosecutor handling the final asset forfeiture of the Beacon Fertility Clinic.
I picked up the phone, unlocked the screen, and opened the message.

My heart skipped a beat.
I tapped the attachment. Two new profile cards downloaded onto my screen, complete with photographs, birth dates, and current locations.
Two more children. Two more pieces of the genetic puzzle I never knew existed, living out there in the world, waiting to be found.
I stared at the glowing screen for a long, quiet moment. The wind whispered through the coastal pines, and the sound of my daughters laughing echoed from the lawn below.

I closed the app, locked the phone, and set it face down on the table.
The past was behind us. But the story? The story was only just beginning.
