Chapter 6 - THE CLINIC'S MASTERMINDWhen I came to, the pain in the back of my head felt like a jagged spike being driven into my skull with every heartbeat.

I groaned, trying to lift my arms, but heavy steel shackles bit sharply into my wrists. I was seated upright in a rusted metal chair, bolted directly into the concrete floor of what looked like a subterranean medical laboratory.

The room was damp, smelling strongly of antiseptic, formalin, and wet earth. Fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting a harsh, buzzing glare across rows of stainless steel lab tables, medical monitors, and glass specimen jars filled with unidentifiable biological samples.

"He's awake."

The voice came from the shadows to my left.

Footsteps clicked against the concrete floor. A woman stepped into the light. She wore a pristine white lab coat over expensive clothing, her silver-streaked hair pulled back into a tight, professional bun.

It wasn't Emily’s mother. It was Dr. Aris Thorne—the former head geneticist at the Beacon Fertility Clinic, the exact facility where my genetic material had supposedly been "accidentally" mixed up five years ago.

I strained against the shackles, my muscles burning. "Thorne... You're supposed to be in federal prison. The clinic was shut down years ago for illegal genetic tampering."

Dr. Thorne smiled, walking over to a stainless steel tray and picking up a surgical scalpel. She tested the edge with her thumb.

"Federal prison, Ryan? Please. Bureaucrats are so easily fooled by a well-timed disappearance and a corpse double in a burning vehicle," she said smoothly, walking in a slow circle around my chair. "Besides, my work here wasn't finished. Not by a long shot."

"What work?" I spat, blood trickling down the back of my neck from my head wound. "What is all of this? What do you want with me?"

Dr. Thorne stopped right in front of me, leaning down so her face was inches from mine. Her eyes held the terrifying gleam of a true mad scientist.

"We didn't steal your genetic material by accident, Ryan," she whispered softly. "We harvested it. You carry a very rare, highly coveted genetic mutation—one that resists cellular decay and enhances neural plasticity. Perfect for cognitive acceleration experiments."

My stomach churned violently. "You... you engineered children using me without consent?"

"Not just children, Ryan. A generation," she corrected, walking over to a computer monitor on the wall and pressing a key.

The wall-mounted screen flickered to life, displaying a digital family tree diagram. At the top was my name. Below it branched out not two, not three, but five different file folders.

Lily (Subject A - Secured)

Chloe (Subject B - Recovered from the wall)

Mara (Subject C - Active security operative)

My breath hitched. "Five... There are five of them?"

"Six, technically," Dr. Thorne corrected casually. "Though the middle one didn't survive the initial surrogate transfer. But yes, five successful gestational matches, carried by various surrogate mothers under Claire's supervision."

"Claire tried to stop you," I snarled, struggling against the heavy chains. "Her journal said you went too far!"

Dr. Thorne’s expression hardened instantly.

"Claire grew weak," she said coldly. "She felt guilt. She thought she could play domestic house with you and Emily, hiding Lily in plain sight while keeping Chloe locked away in that pathetic service passage. So, we had to remove her from the equation. A simple car crash, arranged by our dearest Mara."

The door behind the lab bench slowly creaked open.

Stepping out of the shadows was the young girl in the yellow dress—Mara. She wiped the blade of her knife clean with a cloth, her expression completely blank, devoid of any childlike emotion.

And behind her walked another figure, holding a silver tray with a syringe filled with glowing blue liquid.

It was Emily.
