Chapter 20 - THE FINAL PROMISE"Dad! Come on, join us!"

Leo’s voice rang out across the lawn, bright and full of life, as he tossed the football in my direction.
I looked down at the ball rolling to a stop near my porch steps. I smiled, setting my coffee cup down on the table, and stood up from the wooden chair. My shoulder twinged with a dull ache, but it was a reminder of survival, not fear.
I walked down the steps onto the green grass, bending down to pick up the football.
All four of them ran toward me, their faces lit with uncontainable smiles, surrounding me in a warm, chaotic cluster of hugs and laughter. Lily grabbed my right hand, Chloe wrapped her arms around my waist, Maya leaned against my shoulder, and Leo tossed a playful grin my way as he bounced on his heels.
I looked around at my children—every single one of them, born of chaos and saved by love.
"Alright, alright, you asked for it," I laughed, tucking the football under my arm and running across the lawn after them as they scattered in mock terror, their laughter echoing up into the bright, clear Pacific sky.
