Chapter 18 - THE COLLAPSE"Drop your weapon!" the operative holding me screamed, pressing the pistol barrel harder against my temple.

I looked over at Lily and Chloe. Their eyes were wide, shining with unshed tears, but they weren't crying out. They were watching me with a quiet, heartbreaking strength.

"Dad..." Lily whispered.

I took a deep breath, feeling the cold metal of the gun against my skin. I knew what was coming. The global broadcast had gone out; the syndicate was exposed, but they were going to bury us here in the dark before the authorities could reach us.

"Do it," I whispered, staring straight into the tinted visor of the operative holding me. "The world already knows."

The operative’s finger tightened on the trigger.

Suddenly, a deafening, ear-splitting screech echoed through the bunker.

It wasn't a gunshot. It was a massive, high-frequency sonic pulse radiating from the ceiling's emergency communication array—a failsafe protocol Leo had programmed into the server before it was smashed.

The tactical operatives instantly dropped their weapons, clutching their heads in agonizing pain as their helmet-integrated communication systems shrieked with unbearable feedback.

"Argh! My ears!" the guard holding me screamed, releasing his grip and stumbling backward.

"Now! Run!" Leo yelled, grabbing Lily’s hand while Maya yanked Chloe up from the floor.

"Get to the emergency ventilation shaft!" I shouted, pointing toward a narrow maintenance hatch behind the supply shelves that led straight out to the other side of the mountain ridge.

We scrambled toward the hatch. Maya pushed Lily and Chloe through first, followed closely by Leo.

The lead operative, shaking off the sonic pulse, raised his sidearm and fired blindly into the smoke.

Crack.

A sharp, searing pain tore through my left shoulder. Warm blood instantly soaked through the fabric of my jacket. I gritted my teeth, suppressing a cry of agony, and threw myself headfirst into the narrow metal ventilation tunnel just as a hail of bullets pinged against the steel frame behind me.

We crawled through the dark, cramped conduit as fast as humanly possible, the sound of shouting operatives fading behind us.

After what felt like miles of crawling in absolute darkness, a burst of fresh, cool mountain air hit our faces.

We tumbled out of the ventilation shaft onto the open, rocky hillside just as the first rays of dawn began to paint the horizon in brilliant, golden strokes of light.

And down in the valley below us, flashing red and blue lights were already swarming the base of the mountain by the dozens.

Federal Marshals, FBI tactical units, and state police cruisers had arrived.
