Chapter 12 - THE DECRYPTED THREATThe warmth of our new coastal home vanished in an instant, replaced by a suffocating, chilling tension.

We gathered in the living room. Chloe and Lily sat close together on the sofa, clutching small pillows to their chests, wide-eyed as they stared at Leo. Maya stood by the window, nervously chewing on her thumbnail, watching the dark coastline outside.

Leo sat stiffly on the edge of the armchair, refusing the glass of water I offered him. He unlatched his battered leather suitcase and pulled out a heavy, military-grade encrypted tablet.

"This is what I pulled from the main server before the bunker's power grid was sabotaged," Leo said, tapping the screen. A holographic projection flickered into life in the dim light of the living room.

It displayed a map of the Pacific Northwest overlaid with flashing red beacon points.

"What are we looking at, Leo?" I asked, kneeling beside him, trying to keep my voice calm for the girls' sake.

"Dr. Thorne wasn't the master architect, Dad. She was just a mid-level project director," Leo said, swiping the screen to reveal an organizational chart with a heavily redacted name at the very top. "The real funding for the enhanced lineage project came from an international conglomerate called Aegis Biotech. And when the federal government raided Dr. Thorne’s lab six months ago, Aegis didn't abandon the project. They outsourced it."

Maya’s eyes widened in horror. "The clean-up crew."

"Exactly," Leo nodded. "They aren't just trying to wipe out evidence. They're trying to reclaim their assets. All of us. And according to the server logs, our biological profiles were automatically pinged to their tactical division the moment the file was decrypted on your phone today."

The blood rushed out of my face.

I remembered checking my email on the back porch just an hour ago. The secure database file from the federal prosecutor.

"My phone..." I stammered. "They tracked my IP address through the download."

"Not just your IP address," Leo corrected coldly. "They’ve been tracking every digital footprint associated with the Davis lineage for years. Emily didn't just hide Chloe in the wall—she was reporting our coordinates to Aegis every month in exchange for funding to maintain this lifestyle."

The betrayal hit me like a physical blow. Even after everything, Emily’s web of deception extended deeper than I had ever imagined. She hadn't just been a captive to Dr. Thorne’s madness; she had been a willing warden reporting back to the syndicate.

Before anyone could speak, the soft, warm glow of our living room lights suddenly flickered, sputtered, and died.

Absolute darkness enveloped the house.

Outside, the distant hum of vehicle engines broke the sound of the ocean waves. Headlights swept across our front windows, casting long, twisting shadows across the walls.

Leo snapped his tablet shut, his face deadpan.

"They're here," he whispered.
