Chapter 7 - THE WIFE'S CONFESSIONI stared at Emily, my chest heaving, every ounce of love I had ever felt for her turning into pure, unadulterated poison.

"Emily..." I whispered, my voice cracking. "You were in on this from the beginning. The clinic didn't blackmail you. You hired them."

Emily walked slowly toward me, stopping just out of arm's reach. She looked tired, her hair slightly disheveled, but her eyes were disturbingly calm. She didn't look like a woman who had just been arrested by the police hours ago.

"Arrested? Oh, Ryan, please," Emily said with a bitter laugh, answering the unspoken question in my head. "The police department in this county has been on Dr. Thorne’s payroll for a decade. The officers who picked me up tonight were ours. They drove me straight here."

She reached out, gently resting her hand on my cheek—the exact same gesture Chloe had made earlier tonight in our hallway. I flinched away from her touch as if she were burning coal.

"I loved you, Ryan," Emily said softly, her thumb brushing against my jawline. "I really did. When we met, you were brilliant, ambitious, untouchable. But when Dr. Thorne approached us with the proposal—using your DNA to create an elite lineage of genetically enhanced children—I saw our true potential."

"You sold your own flesh and blood to a mad scientist!" I roared, straining against the heavy steel shackles until the metal cut deep into my wrists, drawing warm blood.

"I secured our legacy!" Emily snapped back, her voice suddenly sharp, slicing through the sterile air of the lab. "Do you know what the world is coming to, Ryan? Chaos. Collapse. But these children—our children—possess intelligence, physical resilience, and adaptability far beyond ordinary humans. They are the future ruling class!"

"And what about Chloe?" I demanded, tears of rage burning in my eyes. "Locking her inside a suffocating, dark wall for years? Feeding her like an animal through a baseboard slot? Was that part of your 'elite lineage'?"

Emily’s face tightened.

"Chloe was defective," she said coldly. "She showed neurological rejection symptoms early on—panic attacks, emotional dependency, weakness. She didn't meet Dr. Thorne’s benchmark standards. We were going to relocate her, but Claire hid her in your service passage out of sentimentality. I let her stay there because it amused me. Watching you live your comfortable, blind little life, just inches away from the ghost of your own failure."

"You're insane," I whispered. "Both of you."

Dr. Thorne stepped forward, holding up the syringe filled with glowing blue liquid.

"Insane? No, Mr. Davis. We are pioneers," Dr. Thorne said smoothly, stepping up behind Emily. "And now, to complete the neural synchronization process, we need a final genetic sample directly from the source. Your cerebral spinal fluid."

Mara stepped forward, holding the heavy surgical harness steady, while Dr. Thorne raised the thick, terrifying needle toward the base of my skull.

"Hold him still," Dr. Thorne instructed.

Emily stepped behind my chair, locking her hands over my shoulders, pressing me firmly against the metal backrest.

May you like

"I'm sorry, Ryan," Emily whispered into my ear, her breath cold against my skin. "It's for the greater good."

The needle descended.
