Chapter 12 - The Emergency Purge

Before I could process Clara's warning, a low, ominous vibration rumbled through the earth beneath us.

The grass beneath our boots shivered. Down the block, several neighborhood dogs started barking frantically. From inside the house, a sharp, piercing alarm began to wail—a high-pitched electronic shriek that signaled the activation of a structural self-destruct mechanism.

"Sir, step back! You need to clear the perimeter!" a frantic police officer yelled, sprinting out toward us from the front porch while waving his arms. "The basement gas lines have been remotely ruptured! We're dealing with a structural collapse!"

Where were the tactical officers who had just entered?

As if answering my thought, two uniform cops staggered backward out of the front door, coughing violently as a thick, gray cloud of acrid smoke billowed out behind them. One of them collapsed onto the lawn, gasping for air.

"It's a trap!" the officer wheezed, clutching his throat. "The internal doors... they locked automatically behind us! The whole second floor is venting gas!"

I handed Sophie to a nearby paramedic, ignoring his protests. "Hold her. Do not let go of her."

"Sir, you can't go back in there—!"

I didn't listen. I lunged past the police tape, sprinting up the steps and throwing myself through the splintered front doorway. The interior of the house was already choking with a heavy, sweetish vapor that burned my nostrils and made my eyes water instantly.

"Vanessa!" I screamed, coughing as I tore down the hallway toward the master suite.

The master bedroom door was jammed half-open, wedged against a fallen shelving unit. I threw my shoulder against the wood, smashing it wide open.

The room was a disaster zone. The floor paneling had completely collapsed into the dark abyss below, leaving only a narrow ledge of charred hardwood around the perimeter. And standing right at the edge of that gaping chasm, framed by the swirling smoke, was Vanessa.

She wasn't running. She wasn't fighting. She was standing perfectly still, holding a remote detonator in her right hand, her face smeared with soot and a serene, terrifying smile carved onto her lips.
