Chapter 8 - The Subterranean Labyrinth

We crashed hard into a pile of discarded industrial foam and old blankets at the bottom of the pit, the impact knocking the wind completely out of my lungs.
A sharp clang echoed just above us as the heavy wooden floor panels slammed shut with an earth-shattering bang, plunging the subterranean bunker into absolute, suffocating darkness. The pneumatic lock clicked into place with a definitive, mechanical finality.
"Daddy... it's too dark," Sophie whimpered, her small body trembling against mine as she burrowed deeper into my jacket.
"I've got you, baby. I'm right here," I panted, coughing as the thick dust from the collapse settled around us.
I fumbled blindly along my belt and jacket pockets until my fingers grazed the cold metal body of the flashlight. I pressed the power button once, twice—and a brilliant beam of white light cut through the oppressive gloom, illuminating our surroundings.
We weren't in a simple dirt cellar. We were standing inside a massive, reinforced concrete bunker divided by narrow, industrial-grade corridors lined with old filing cabinets, electrical junction boxes, and yellowing blueprints taped to the walls. Every single wall was covered in frantic, overlapping scribbles—thousands of architectural sketches, family trees, and obsessive notes written in Vanessa's neat, precise handwriting, charting out every phase of her identity theft and our marriage.
"Mark..."
The weak, raspy voice came from the shadows just past a rusted metal shelving unit to our right.
I swept the flashlight beam across the floor. Clara, the skeletal twin, was dragging herself along the concrete, leaving a faint smear of dust in her wake. Her breath came in ragged, painful wheezes, but she was miraculously still alive after the collapse.
"She... she's coming down the service stairwell," Clara choked out, coughing up a drop of dark blood. "The... the master panel in the hallway has a manual override. She thinks we're trapped, but... but there's a maintenance shaft behind the old generator."
"Why should I trust you?" I demanded, keeping Sophie close as I backed away slightly, shining the light in Clara's face. "You're her twin. You helped her plan this, didn't you?"
Clara let out a bitter, wet laugh that sounded like cracking dry twigs. "Plan this? I was her first victim, Mark. Years ago, before she met you, she tried to take our mother’s estate. When I threatened to expose her forged documents, she locked me down here and assumed my name for a year before she found you online and assumed Vanessa's name. She's a serial identity thief. Every life she lives is built on a corpse."
Before I could process the staggering depth of her madness, a loud, metallic clank echoed from the far end of the corridor.
Clack. Clack. Clack.

Heavy boots were descending the concealed spiral staircase at the far end of the bunker. A beam of harsh LED light cut through the dust-choked air, sweeping across the concrete walls and drawing steadily closer.
"She's here," Clara whispered, her eyes widening in sheer terror.
